The Sumter Item sports writer Danny Kelly conducted a question-and-answer interview with each of the 12 high school football coaches in Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties, asking each the same five questions about their recently concluded spring practices. Today we have Manning High School head coach Reggie Kennedy.
Q: What was your No. 1 goal coming into spring football practice, and did you achieve it?
A: Yeah. Just wanted to come in and just get in our base offense, install our base defense and just try to find a scheme that kinda fit our kids. Gave us an opportunity to kinda evaluate our kids; just kinda figuring out where they fit in our schemes, so I feel really good coming out of the spring. I think we accomplished that goal in the short time we were out there.
Q: Were there any individuals who stood out to you?
A: Yeah, a few. Aaron Smith, returning linebacker and returning receiver, he stood out. He’s a rising senior. Trent Brown, strong safety, wide receiver on offense; and also at running back, Caleb Wright.
Q: Was there anything that left you concerned after spring practice?
A: Still a little concerned with the quarterback position. We need to solidify that. And just the inexperience up front on the offensive line. I just think with time they’ll continue to get better, but those are some areas we kinda need to address on the offensive side of the ball.
Q: Where do you need to make the most progress over the summer entering fall?
A: Probably up front – in the trenches. I just think we gotta get stronger over the summer, and I think we gotta develop some confidence on the O-line and D-line throughout the summer.
Q: What was one area or position you feel like you solidified in spring?
A: Probably our secondary. I feel like that’s where most of our experience is at, in our secondary. We got four guys back there that played a lot last year. That’s probably our most experienced position right now.
