Manning took care of business on Friday, crushing their crosstown 1A rival 62-8 at Ramsey Stadium.
Both teams focused on the ground attack in their season openers, totaling just 41 yards in the air on the evening.
The Monarchs took control from the start, scoring their first touchdown of the season on a two-yard run by senior Caleb Wright. Wright finished with three touchdowns on the evening, including a 24-yard scramble to put Manning ahead 21-0 with 10:01 remaining in the second quarter.
Manning’s special teams unit was especially impressive, blocking three punts, and returning two of those for touchdowns. The Monarchs added a third special teams touchdown when Jonathan Pringle returned a punt 60 yards to put Manning ahead 55-0 with 4:23 to play in the third quarter.
Ernie Calloway scored a rushing touchdown for Scott’s Branch with just five seconds remaining to prevent the shutout. Up to that point, the lone bright spot for the Eagles was a 41-yard run by Marquel Coard towards the end of the second quarter. Otherwise, the Scott’s Branch offensive line struggled to contain the bigger and deeper Manning defensive line.
