T.L. Hanna hoping to keep momentum going against Florida foe

When coach Jeff Tone exited Jim Fraser Field on Friday night, he was flooded with mixed emotions. Although he was ecstatic about winning his first game as the head football coach of T.L. Hanna High School, he knew there were things that needed some cleaning up.

Holding penalties, false start penalties, and illegal procedure penalties plagued the Yellow Jacket offense for most of the night, specifically in the first half. “We played great defense, but we had a lot of penalties on the offensive side of the ball that really stalled some good drives and took away some big plays,” Tone said.

Although minor issues, and typical for the first game of the year, Tone knows that they must be corrected if the Yellow Jackets want to walk off the field victorious on Friday night.

The Inlet Grove Hurricanes are coming into town this week from Riviera Beach, FL, and they are bringing a lot of speed with them. “The one thing you think of with Florida high school football is speed, and that’s what Inlet Grove brings to the table,” Tone said.

Tone then went on to discuss how they also have some good size and athleticism. “They play with a no tight end set and they spread you out; their receivers have some great size too, one of them is about 6’2, 208 lbs.”

In order to win on Friday night, coach Tone said that they will have to tackle well in the open field, force some turnovers, and play disciplined on offense and lose the penalties.

The Inlet Grove Hurricanes are coming off of a 5-4 campaign in 2018, and are currently 1-1 heading into Friday night’s game. They defeated Citi Christian Academy last Friday by a score of 15-14.

T.L. Hanna’s matchup against Inlet Grove marks the second season in a row that the Yellow Jackets have played a team outside of South Carolina.

Last season, the Yellow Jackets played Royal Imperial Collegiate, a boarding school out of St. Catharines, Ontario. The Yellow Jackets won by a final score of 41-7.

Kickoff for Friday night’s game is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Jim Fraser Field.
