109 players see action in T.L. Hanna’s 47-6 rout of Inlet Grove

With an extraordinary rushing attack, and a defensive performance for the ages, the T.L. Hanna Yellow Jackets toppled the Inlet Grove Hurricanes at Jim Fraser Field on Friday night.

T.L. Hanna scored early and often, racking up 30 points in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets dominated the Hurricanes 47-6, even with a running clock in the second half.

“The kids came out playing with great effort early, and fortunately we had no injuries,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Jason Tone whose team improved to 2-0 with the victory. “We executed very well.” Tone then went on to add that he was happy with the offense’s discipline after struggling with penalties last Friday.

The T.L. Hanna scoring onslaught began in the first quarter, when the Yellow Jackets marched down the field on their first possession for a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Preston Pettway. The Yellow Jackets scored on their next possession after senior Ja’Nike Truesdale scored on a 6-yard run.

T.L. Hanna wasn’t finished, adding two more scores in the first quarter, including a 26-yard touchdown pass from Junior quarterback Noah Hamby to senior fullback Jackson Pusey. Senior Shy’Heem Clemons rounded out the first quarter onslaught with an 8-yard touchdown run.

There was, perhaps, nobody on the offense more ecstatic about the Yellow Jacket performance than Hamby. “We played really good on the few plays we got,” Hamby said. The touchdown pass in the first quarter marked the first touchdown pass of Hamby’s career. “We had been practicing the play all week, so we were ready; I was really excited to get that first one out of the way.”

After the offense added two more scores in the second quarter, including another 2-yard run touchdown run by Pettway, and a 12-yard touchdown run by sophomore Jaylon Thompson, it was the defense that really stole the show.

The T.L. Hanna front seven suffocated the Inlet Grove offensive line in the first half. The Hurricanes had only three plays gain positive yardage in the first two quarters. Senior defensive lineman Jaylin Thomas was consistently in the Hurricane backfield. “We played great, we swarmed to the ball and got better,” Thomas said.

The second half saw a running clock, and gave some of the younger guys a chance to get some quality varsity experience. “We had 109 guys dress out, and all 109 got in; that is huge for our program,” Tone said.

The Hurricanes scored their lone touchdown of the night when Inlet Grove quarterback Desean Dixon found receiver Antonio Council in the back of the endzone from 10 yards out.

Senior kicker Juan Velarde naild a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Yellow Jackets only score of the second half.

Next Up: The Yellow Jackets go on the road to face a local foe, the Belton-Honea Path Bears, next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
