One way or another, a Richland One high school football team will get its first win of the 2019 season when Dreher visits Eau Claire for a 7:30 PM kick at WJ Keenan High School Stadium.
The 2019 season has not been kind to both teams who enter the contest a combined 0-6. Eau Claire was beaten 74-0 on Friday Wagener-Salley, the #2 ranked 1A team in the latest SCHSL Media Poll.
Both teams have struggled offensively, attempting to rely on their defenses to keep scores low and give themselves a chance. Unfortunately for both, those chances have been somewhere between slim and none.
Given the way their seasons have unfolded thus far, expect an old-fashioned defensive struggle on Friday night. Dreher has scored just 14 points in three games, or under five points per game. While the Shamrocks will be countering with a cool 2 points per game average, scoring a total of 6 points in three contests. Defensively, Dreher has allowed 138 total points to their opponents while Eau Claire has given up 159.
“We definitely have a clear understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, and right now there’s a whole lot more weaknesses than strengths, but we’re working on that and the guys have had a really good attitude.” says head coach, Treigh Sullivan when asked about Dreher’s most recent losses.
The Blue Devils will be looking for history to repeat itself. Dreher defeated Eau Claire 54-0 last season in the midst of a run of five wins in six contests.
Look for a spirited effort from the Blue Devils, as the coaching staff is stressing overall team improvement and understanding what it takes to be successful. “We’re really trying to worry about us right now and improving offense, defense and special teams, we’re really just trying to get better,” emphasized Coach Sullivan.
They’ll have the opportunity to get better this Friday, and an opportunity to get its first W of the 2019 season.
