Blue Devils down Eau Claire 42-12 for first victory

By Kelli McAlhany | Dreher Contributor

Dreher notched their first win of the 2019 season, defeating Eau Claire 42-12 on Friday night at WJ Keenan High School.

The Blue Devils had to sit through a 1-hour rain delay, but the Dreher offense came out blazing hot, scoring three touchdowns before Eau Claire could answer, and then used a stingy, opportunistic defense to close out the victory.

After an early exchange of punts, the Blue Devils went to work deep inside Shamrock territory and promptly scored on a Micaiah Settles run to set the tone early.

Another Eau Claire punt set up the Dreher offense just inside the Eau Claire 49. Ryan Campbell found Marvin Hires for a nice TD pass to give Dreher a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Once again, the Dreher defense held the Eau Claire offense to a punt and took over at their own 43. The Blue Devils put together a good drive culminating in a 1-yard TD plunge, again by Micaiah Settles, stretching Dreher’s lead to 21-0 with 7:12 left in the first half.

The Shamrocks took the ensuing kickoff and finally put together a scoring drive of their own, highlighted by athletic plays from their quarterback Shytrell Oneil, making the score 21-6 after a failed 2-point conversion.

The Blue Devils quickly answered on a nifty 28-yard scamper from David Epps to extend the lead to 28-6.

The Blue Devils defense put the game away in the fourth quarter. The Shamrocks were driving, but the Dreher defense stymied Eau Claire for a turnover on downs at the 9:47 mark.

After a Blue Devils punt, junior quarterback Sterling Brown intercepted a pass and took it 63 yards to the endzone for a 35-12 lead.

Brown then picked up his second interception of the game on the next possession, giving the Blue Devils offense a shortened field. Dreher found the endzone yet again on the very next play, a 14-yard rushing touchdown from Jordan Foy.

Enter Jordan Foy, who hits pay dirt on the first play of the possession on a 14-yard ramble to close out the nights scoring at Dreher 42 Eau Claire 12.

Dreher takes a 1-3 record into their game against regional power Gilbert next Friday.
