Defending SCISA 3A state champions Hammond handled the Panthers without any trouble, taking a 56-0 win back with them to Columbia on Friday night.
The Skyhawks ares known for their football prowess. They have multiple NCAA D1 recruits on their roster including Jordan Burch, the second ranked recruit in the nation for the 2020 class, who wreaked havoc in the backfield all night long. Burch constantly pressured Pinewood’s quarterback Myron Wigfall and played a big role in nullifying Pinewood’s run game.
“It was fun to compete with somebody that has that much talent,” said offensive tackle Logan Stern.
The Hammond defense was fierce and aggressive all night long, not allowing the Panthers offense to notch a first down in the entire first half.
The Skyhawks were led by quarterback Jackson Muschamp on the offensive side of the ball. Muschamp is the son of the South Carolina Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp, and has offers from several schools, including Boston College and Wofford. Muschamp notched three passing touchdowns on the day, and directed the Hammond offense up and down the field with ease.
“It’s pretty much unstoppable,” said defensive back Addison Venittelli. “I know that everyone on our defense was playing their hardest and they still ran all over us. There just isn’t much you can do.”
Pinewood struggled with some key injuries on the night. Both Josh Higuchi and Cameron Carroll were sidelined in the first quarter with game ending injuries. Higuchi with a pulled muscle in his back and Carroll with a leg injury. Both players are crucial to Pinewood’s success and their absence was evident on the field.
The Panthers put together a nice drive late in the fourth quarter off of a fumble they recovered. Wide receiver Ben Brown made a spectacular catch, pinning the ball to his leg as he hit the ground. They were stopped short of the end zone however, and didn’t convert on 4th down.
Next up for the Panthers is a showdown with Heathwood Hall next Friday.
