Dreher picked up a convincing 42-12 victory over Eau Claire on Friday, providing hope that the Blue Devils may be on the verge of turning around what had been a disastrous start to the season. However, the Blue Devils have a major test coming this Friday whey they host their high-octane, crosstown rivals, the Gilbert Indians. Gilbert is ranked 7th overall in the latest SCHSL 3A Media poll.
“[We’re] obviously excited to get their first win, but we were still kind of humble about it,” said Dreher head coach Treigh Sullivan. “We still made a lot of mistakes, and we were happy but they also know that there are a lot of things we need to clean up.”
When further pressed about areas of concerns, it was noted that “[We] still have a bunch of areas that have concerns,” said Sullivan. “We need to be consistent in all three phases — in offense, defense, and special teams.”
Sullivan and the Blue Devils have plenty of respect for the undefeated Indians. “Gilbert is very good, and they are playing really well right now,” said Sullivan. “[They’re] probably the best team we’ve seen at this point and they are a confident group. They’re not just playing well, they’re playing with a high level of confidence on offense and defense. Their offense is really special.”
Gilbert checks in with an unblemished 4-0 record after their 42-32 victory over Airport last week, while the Blue Devils enter the contest at 1-3. The Indians have shown a prolific offense so far this season, averaging just under 47 points per game. They have struggled a bit defensively however, allowing 32 points per game, including 47 points to Gray Collegiate in their season opener.
The Blue Devils will counter with a less productive, albeit improving offense, at 14 points per game while giving up just over 37 points per game.
