Pinewood set for 3A showdown with Heathwood Hall

Pinewood Prep is set to face off against Heathwood Hall Friday, August 20th, in a region showdown.

Pinewood’s start to the season has consisted of tough tests with the likes of top-ranked Hammond and Trinity-Byrnes. While Pinewood has yet to win a game up to this point, Friday’s game seems like their best opportunity thus far.

The Panthers fell short when they traveled to Heathwood last season by a score of 14-6, in a low scoring defensive battle. The game though, ended abruptly due to weather. “It was a tough game that ended early. If the weather stayed clear there’s no doubt in my mind that we would’ve pulled out a win. They’re nothing crazy and it’s a very winnable game for this years team,” said Pinewood graduate and former team captain, Mikey McVeigh.

Heathwood Hall is coming off of a 32-14 loss to Laurence Manning Academy so they will be looking at this game as an opportunity to get back in the win column. Both teams are motivated and have a great shot to take home a victory.

Pinewood Prep is coming off of a game in which they suffered many key injuries. Senior wide receiver Josh Higuchi and junior running back Cameron Carroll have been limited in practice all week and the team will certainly need them when they take the field on Friday. They have been vital to the team’s success as both players have found the end-zone this season. “This won’t be an easy test but I feel that if we execute on the big play opportunities and can expand the lengths of our drives we have a shot,” said Higuchi.

Pinewood has been no stranger to the injury bug this season, but if senior Quarterback Myron Wigfall, running back Cameron Carroll, and the wide receiver duo of Josh Higuchi and Ben Brown can all take the field Friday night, then fans might finally season the Panther offense fully unleashed.

They will also have the home crowd behind them opposed to last year’s meeting. “I feel like we can do well,” said senior offensive lineman Alec Gauthier. “From my past experiences with this team I know that it will be a physical game and it will let us know where we’re at for the rest of the year.”
