Gilbert score touchdowns on four of its six possessions in the first half, and piled up another 28 points in the second half to beat Dreher 56-10 on Friday.
Memorial Stadium, in the historic Rosewood neighborhood, was to what looked like a beautiful night for high school football, and the Blue Devils even hung around for a quarter before the Indians began their assault of the Dreher defense.
Dreher received the opening kickoff but couldn’t sustain a drive. Forced to punt, Dreher pinned Gilbert to start from its own 20. The Indians wasted little time and methodically moved the ball down the field in bursts, culminating in a 46-yd TD pass to Matt Reid, putting Gilbert up 7-0 with 6:45 left in the first quarter.
Gilbert and Dreher traded possessions via mistakes and touth defense, with the Blue Devils taking over for their third possession and marching down the field. Dreher used a balanced offensive attack that saw the Devils get all the way to the Gilbert 5-yard line. Unable to convert a 3rd and 1 at the Gilbert 5, Dreher’s kicker connected on a 23-yard FG to make the score 7-3 with just over 31 seconds left in the first quarter.
Dreher looked to seize the momentum, but Gilbert was having none of it. The Indians promptly answered with a long TD drive to open the second quarter, highlighted by 24-yd touchdown pass to Reid to push the score their lead to 14-3 with 10:56 left in the 2nd quarter.
Gilbert stormed down the field, after Dreher stalled on their next possession, with Walker taking the ball to the house from 59 yards out giving the Indians a 21-3 advantage with 7:03 left in the third quarter.
Dreher would possess the ball three more times without success while the Indians would add another score on a 16-yard touchdown pass, going into the half with the score Gilbert 28-Dreher 3.
Gilbert added four more touchdowns in the second half, with Dreher’s only offense coming on a nifty 80-plus yard interception return by Camerin Robinson to make the final margin Gilbert 56-Dreher 10.
“Some positives we are taking from Friday’s game is that there were no other major injuries on our side,” said Dreher head coach Treigh Sullivan. He added “there will be no further changes to the offensive or defensive philosophy during this season.”
The Blue Devils will take next week off before taking a short trip down Highway 378 to Lower Richland for a 7:30 PM game on October 4th.
