Dreher, Lower Richland set to open Region IV-4A play

After last week’s bye week, the Dreher Blue Devils will travel a few miles down Garners Ferry Road to take on conference foe Lower Richland at 7:30 p.m.

Both Dreher and Lower Richland enter Friday’s game with identical 1-4 records. This is each team first Region IV-4A game this, many consider it one of the most important games of the season for two teams that may be battling for the last playoff spot in the region.

After sitting down with assistant coach, George Clark, it was noted that “Our strengths as a team, are going to be our team discipline. Also, our execution in the special teams and kicking game, I expect us to have an advantage there. I think that the difficult schedule we’ve played up to this point in the season is going to pay off for us in region play. We have a few people hurt, but a lot of teams do. We have a lot of youth, but we have five games under our belt so that can’t be an excuse. It’s time for us to play well.”

On paper, this regional matchup looks very even as both teams enter the game with similar defensive statistics, giving up around 40 points per game. Offensively Dreher averages just over 13 points per game, while Lower Richland counters at just over 19 points per game.

Despite the identical 1-4 records, both teams can take solace knowing everyone starts with a clean slate this week. Last year, the Blue Devils fell to LR 28-14 at home. Whichever team comes out on top on Friday will be able to consider themselves undefeated and tied for first place in the region.

It’s a whole new season.
