Sumter looks to continue their incredible start to the season as they start region play this Friday at Freddie Solomon Memorial Field, where they will take on Lugoff-Elgin High School.
The Gamecocks and the Demons have faced off a total of 3 times dating back to 2010. The overall series record is 2-1 in Sumter’s favor. The most recent meeting between these two teams was last year when the new regions were introduced and the two teams found themselves in the same region. In that game, Sumter defeated Lugoff-Elgin 45-0.
The Gamecocks are coming off an impressive victory on the road last week against Bluffton, as they won 70-21 to improve to 5-0. The win pushed the Gamecocks up two spots in the 5A state rankings up from 7th to 5th. Meanwhile, the Trojans are fresh off a nail-biting 14-7 loss against Rock Hill. The Trojans overall record now sits at 2-4.
“It should be a good game. Our defense hasn’t played a run heavy team like Lugoff-Elgin yet this year, and we are excited to go toe-to-toe with them this week,” said senior linebacker Donte Coleman. “Our coaches are preparing us to execute on every down, and we have to go out there and play the best that we can.”
The Gamecock defense has executed in every way possible so far this season. They’ve shut out their opponents twice this year and have only given up 43 points all season. That’s an average of 8.8 points per game. Sumter will look to stop the run this week to continue their stellar play.
After starting 6-0 and going undefeated in non-region play, the Gamecocks start up region play this week. “Region games change everything because now everything matters more and counts towards getting a good seed in the playoffs,” said North Carolina commit Tylee Craft. “Our goal is to be region champs and to use that momentum going into the playoffs to win state.”
The Gamecock offense has improved every game this year, they have scored a total of 262 points through their first 5 games. That’s an average of 52.4 points scored per game. Expect the Gamecock offense to attempt to keep this kind of scoring up at their home field this week. Kickoff is slated for 7:30.
