On a surprisingly hot and humid October night, the Greenwood Eagles dismantled the T.L. Hanna Yellow Jackets by a score 49-22.
Behind a three touchdown night from running back Jyrea Martin, the Eagles used a crushing rushing attack, and took advantage of some critical mistakes by T.L. Hanna to hand the Yellow Jackets their first loss of the season.
T.L. Hanna head coach Jason Tone noted how the team didn’t seem to come out with as much fire as the past games. “We just came out and didn’t have much emotion,” Tone said. “We missed some tackles and struggled offensively.”
The night started on a good note for the Yellow Jackets, as Greenwood fumbled on the opening kickoff. However, T.L. Hanna had to settle for a 50-yard field goal by junior kicker Jay Billingsley. T.L. Hanna led 3-0 at the end of one quarter.
The Eagles put together a long drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Jaylin Tolbert to open up the second quarter. T.L. Hanna answered with a 77-yard touchdown run by Preston Pettway with four minutes to go in the second quarter, but the Eagles responded immediately with a 52-yard touchdown scamper by Jyrea Martin. Greenwood led 14-10 at the half.
The Greenwood offense began to gash the Yellow Jacket defense in the second half. The Eagles put together a long drive that ended with another Jyrea Martin score. T.L. Hanna responded on the ensuing possession with a 75-yard touchdown run by Jackson Pusey. The Yellow Jackets failed on the two-point conversion, making the score 21-16.
The Greenwood Eagles put together another long drive that ended with yet another Jyrea Martin score on a hook and ladder play from 10 yards out. The Eagles led 28-16 at the end of the third quarter.
On T.L. Hanna’s next possession, quarterback Carson Bachellor fumbled, and the Eagles jumped on top of the ball. Jaylin Tolbert scored from two-yards out a few plays later.
The lone bright spot in the fourth quarter came when J.J. Hudson returned a kick 98 yards for a score, making it 35-22.
The last two scores by the Eagles came from a fumbled snap by the Yellow Jackets on their own two-yard line, and a scoop and score on a bad snap on a punt.
Although a tough loss, coach Jason Tone gave credit where credit was due. “Give Greenwood the credit,” Tone said. “They simply outplayed us and outcoached us tonight.”
The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in region play, and the Eagles jump to 3-3 on the season, and 1-2 in region play.
“It’s the 24-hour rule, once 24 hours is up we move on and focus on the next game,” Tone said.
T.L. Hanna looks to bounce back next week against the Easley Green Wave.
