Rebels cruise to 54-0 victory, remain undefeated

In a day full of off-field distractions and activities with Homecoming, the Rebels took care of business on the field swiftly, making easy work of Riverside in a 54-0 victory.

It took only three plays from scrimmage for the Rebels to get out in front when senior quarterback Lawrence Scott connected with senior running back Rahjai Harris for a 28-yard passing touchdown.

Less than three minutes later, Scott got his second passing touchdown of the night dumping it off to senior tight end Kris Byrd who then broke a few tackles and got into the endzone for a 9-yard touchdown.

The Rebels would continue to dominate for the 1st half and they went into the locker room up 47-0 at halftime.

In the second half though, the Rebels took the foot off the gas pedal and gave valuable reps to young players on the second team, and even some members of the Junior Varsity team.

“Homecoming week can obviously bring distractions and make it hard to stay focused on the game,” said Byrnes Head Coach Reggie Shaw. “I thought our offense and defense both came out and performed well”

And both sides of the ball certainly did come out and perform, as the Rebels out-gained the Warriors 450-37. Byrnes average 9.8 yards per play, while Riverside only averaged 0.8 yards per play.

Senior running back Julian Martin came in for relief for Harris early, but Martin put together a great game himself. On the night Martin totaled 103 yards on the ground on only 12 carries, and he added a rushing score as well.

“My dad has always told me to be ready whenever my number is called, so to be able to have a performance like that on Nixon Field is truly a blessing,” Martin said.

Senior cornerback Nijae Crouch snached his 4th interception through only six games in Friday night’s win, and he also brought it back for a touchdown.

With the win, the second ranked Rebels remain undefeated at 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in region. Riverside’s season has been the complete opposite, as they fall to 0-6 and 0-3 in region.

Next week, the Rebels are on the road for a tough region matchup against the 4-2 Mauldin Mavericks.
