Pinewood Prep fell to First Baptist 68-13 on Friday night.
Having lost their previous two games, First Baptist came into the game looking to take care of business against the Panthers.
First Baptist started off red hot with junior quarterback Will Daniel putting the Hurricanes in good field position with a 15-yard scramble. Running back Davian Brown then punched in the touchdown from 1-yard out to put his side up 7-0 with 10:42 left in the first quarter. Brown had a huge night as he finished with three touchdowns.
A big punt return by First Baptist’s Lucas Snow put the Hurricanes in striking distance once again. Will Daniel scrambled out of the pocket for a 15-yard touchdown to give First Baptist a 14-0 lead with 8:52 left in the first quarter.
The Panthers weren’t down and out quite yet though as on their next drive Quarterback Myron Wigfall connected with receiver Josh Higuchi for a 70 yard score. “The touchdown gave us hope early in the game and helped the team feel like we had a chance,” said Higuchi. “In the end though they were too much for us, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.”
With a 14-7 lead First Baptist did not take their foot off the pedal. Will Daniel found Appalachian State commit Sincere Brown on a 50 yard pass to put the Hurricanes in striking distance. On the following play Davian Brown found the end zone, for the second time, this time on a 10-yard run to put his team up 21-7 with 7:48 left in the first quarter.
The First Baptist defense stifled the Panthers offense for the rest of the quarter while the Hurricane’s offense showed no signs of slowing down. Sincere Brown took a screen pass 26 yards for a touchdown to give his team a 28-7 lead. Only minutes later First Baptist was in the end zone again after receiver Don McNeil took a handoff for a 4-yard touchdown to push the lead to 35-7.
After First Baptist tacked on a field goal to give them a 38-7 lead, Pinewood found one more moment of glory. Wigfall found Josh Higuchi on a deep ball once again with 7:42 left in the second quarter for a 70-yard touchdown. The touchdown though, was called back after a taunting penalty which brought the ball 25 yards back from the end-zone. The Panthers though, avoided disaster as on the next play Wigfall threw a perfect pass on the run to Ben Brown in the corner of the end-zone to make the score 38-13.
First Baptist kept their composure and Davian Brown scored his third touchdown of the night putting the Hurricanes up 45-13. The Panthers next possession ended in a safety when abad snap rolled out of their own end zone leaving Pinewood down 47-13 at halftime.
“First Baptist was full of great athletes,” said receiver Ben Brown after the game. “Their pass rush was able to put a lot of pressure on our offense.”
The second half didn’t carry as much excitement as the first as the Panthers were already down by so many points. With 6:39 left in the third quarter Will Daniel found Lucas Snow for a 10-yard score. Snow scored the games next touchdown in the fourth quarter from 1 yard out giving his side a 61-13 advantage.
Freshman running back Patrick Roberts capped off the scoring with a 6-yard rushing touchdown with 5:39 left in the fourth quarter making it 68-13.
The Hurricanesroll on to a 6-2 record while Pinewood drops to 0-7. “First Baptist is extremely well coached, very quick off the ball, and disciplined in every phase of the game,” Captain Grayson Mann stated after the game. “Playing against a team like that is always a challenge, especially on the road.”
