The Dreher Blue Devils put up a hard fight for four quarters this Friday, but ultimately fell 28-7 to Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

Although the Blue Devils have struggled so far this season, Coach Sullivan had to comment on the team’s stamina for dealing with such outcomes.

“You know I think the thing that we continue to try to preach to these guys is growth,” said Sullivan. “You know it’s been a difficult year as far as wins and losses and we anticipated some of that with the amount of experience that we lost, but we’ve seen stride in certain areas and we’re starting to get some people back that have been injured for a couple weeks so we always try to focus on the positives and present a new game plan and great attitude.”

Dreher struck first on Friday when Blue Devils quarterback Campbell found Hires for a 37-yard touchdown pass and catch to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.

The Bruins struggled to the move the ball in the first quarter with Dreher defenders getting constant pressure in the O-W backfield.

An interception in the second quarter ultimately set the Bruins for their first score when they found the end zone with 2:25 left in the half to tie the game 7-7.

“We had a lot of missed plays, missed opportunities,” said Sullivan. “We had our hands on a couple of balls and we just didn’t make plays.”

The Blue Devils had a chance to take a lead heading into halftime after a series of turnovers by both teams, but turned the ball over with just 22 seconds left to send the teams into the break still tied.

Dreher took the second half kickoff and possessed the football all the way to the 4:50 mark but ultimately turned the ball over on downs deep inside OW territory.

The Bruins wasted little time, rattling off explosive play after explosive play, finally connecting on a 40-yard touchdown pass to make the score OW 14 Dreher 7.

After taking the ensuing kickoff up to their own 33 yard line, the Blue Devils turned the ball over once again, setting up the Bruins deep inside Dreher territory.

OW quickly cashed in with another touchdown pass of 30 yards pushing the score to OW 21 Dreher 7 with 1:07 left in the third quarter. The Bruins added one final score with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

The Blue Devils now sit at 1-6 on the season and will attempt to regroup and get ready for another opportunity against the Crestwood Knights (2-4) (0-2) on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
