Coming off their first loss of the season at the hands of the Dorman Cavaliers, the #4 Byrnes Rebels (7-1, 4-1) host the Hillcrest Rams (4-4, 1-4) at Nixon Field for Senior Night.
This senior class for the Rebels has been a special one. It has helped Byrnes rebuild itself to the state power it was throughout the 2000’s.
During the freshman year of the 2020 Senior class, Byrnes finished last in the region with a disappointing 3-7 record overall. The Rebels have lost just eight games total in the three years since, and have had an overall record of 25-8.
Ever since head coach Reggie Shaw joined the Byrnes program back in 2017, the Rebels have begun to get back to the prominence it once had. And this senior class has been a huge help in laying the foundation for Shaw and revitalizing the football program in Duncan.
“This group were sophomores when I arrived at Byrnes and they have embraced the culture that we have tried to instill and build,” said Shaw. “We have tried to outwork everyone, add accountability across the board and bring a physical brand of football to Byrnes. They have embraced it in the classroom, in the weight room, in the community and on the field. I am thankful that I got the chance to coach them and am very proud of what they have accomplished”
The Rebels are coming off of a tough, emotional 35-33 loss to Dorman a week ago, but the Rebels are using that loss as motivation going forward, and they look to show that against Hillcrest on Friday.
“The loss last week was bittersweet for us” senior quarterback Lawrence Scott said. “Yes we lost, but there was a lot we could take from it. I think it’s really motivated us. It makes us want to go harder in practice and the weight room to make sure we aren’t beaten again”
Hillcrest is no pushover however, they are a hard-nosed team that will make you work for every yard and give you a tough test.
They really proved that in last year’s matchup, as they were pulling off a shocker, leading the Rebels 35-19 with only 9:26 left in the fourth quarter. Fortunately for the Rebels, two big interceptions allowed Byrnes to make the comeback and ultimately win the game 42-35. It was certainly a huge disappointment for the Rebels to be down that late in a game they were supposed to easily, but it was a wake up call they needed for the rest of the season
This year, the Rebels are looking to avoid a similar fate, and wrap this game up quick, getting back to the domination they’ve enjoyed all year.
All-time, the Rebels lead the series against Hillcrest 19-2, with the last loss coming in 1995 in a 21-14 defeat at Nixon Field. Byrnes is currently on a 10-game win streak against the Rams and look to continue that on Friday.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Nixon Field in Duncan, South Carolina on Friday, October 24th for the senior night game for the one-loss Byrnes Rebels against the Hillcrest Rams.
