Round 1 of the playoffs are here as the Hurricanes get ready to take on the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins. The Hurricanes finished their regular season with an 8-2 record, finishing second in the region to Daniel.
Wren is coming into this week on the heels of a big win against the Walhalla Razorbacks. They ended the regular season with a statement-making 68-20 victory over Walhalla.
Starting defensive back Shyheim Scotland is ready to get the playoffs started Friday night. “We aren’t changing anything, we are gonna continue to do the same thing that got us here, which is playing Hurricane football. We are gonna go fast on offense and continue, on defense, to get after our opponent” says Scotland.
O-W finished its regular season with a 6-4 record. They are led by coach Kevin Crosby. He is leading a strong and competitive team into the first round Friday.
Starting linebacker Reed Morrissey comments about the Cane’s competition, “Orangeburg has a ton of good athletes on both sides of the ball, and their kick returner will be the fastest player we’ve seen yet, so we’ll have to contain him.” Morrissey understands that the Canes will have to work hard in Friday’s games, but he believes in his team saying, “They have a big offensive line, but we’re confident going in.”
Coach Jeff Tate is coming into Friday’s game with the same level-headed mindset. He is proud of his team for their performance so far this season, but he realizes that they still have work to do in order to continue to advance in the playoffs. “O-W is big, fast, strong and athletic…they are 6-4 on the season, and have played tough competition. We will have to play well, and be sound in order to have a chance for victory” states Tate.
The Hurricanes are hoping to advance further than they did last year, which was when they got knocked out in the third round by Daniel.
“We’re excited to be in the spot we’re in for the playoffs, but we know we have to take it one game at a time,” says Morrisey. “It’s crazy how fast this season has gone by, but none of us are ready for it to end. We have a great senior class who has pushed us all season and led us to where we are.”
