Wren continued their postseason dominance, advancing to the third round of the playoffs with a 65-29 victory over Greer last Friday night.
The upper state championship is within reach as they head to Sirrine Stadium this Friday to face the Greenville Red Raiders.
Wren has made big statements during the playoffs so far. They silenced Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Greer in rounds one and two, but the competition continues to get more difficult with each passing round. The Red Raiders will put up a fight against the Canes Friday night. “Each round gets more difficult…it will be a challenge” comments head Coach Jeff Tate whose team improved to 10-2 overall with last week’s win.
The Red Raiders have a strong offense that the Cane’s defense will have to find a way to limit. “They have a good receiving core, and their quarterback is a good athlete. They also have a really big offensive line that is solid” says linebacker Reed Morrissey. They will be a challenge for the Hurricanes. But, the Hurricanes’ defense was electric last Friday night against Greer, and they are planning to bring that same intensity into this Friday’s game.
Defensive back Shyheim Scotland sheds some light on Wren’s mindset going into this week’s game, “With our team being senior-led and a state championship in sight, we are determined to let nothing step in our way. We are aware of our opponent’s abilities and are aware of how good they are. But, we also know our abilities, and we believe if we play at the level I know we can, we will be playing for an upper state championship next week.”
A bigger incentive to win Friday night came about on Thursday when the Daniel Lions fell to the Ridgeview Blazers. With that loss, a win this week would secure a home game for the Canes in the upper state championship.
